Mental Health Promotion, Prevention, And Intervention For...

The article I chose to review is Research Opportunities in the Area of Mental Health Promotion, Prevention, and Intervention for Children and Youth. I first found this article through AJOT and I realized I had been given this issue through a family friend, so I referred to it from then on. This AJOT issue was from September/October of 2014. After reading through the article, I realized that there was an additional article with further information. There was a systematic review that occurred before the actual evidence based practice research. There is also a book available through AOTA called Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion, Prevention, and Intervention for Children Youth that can also be referred too.†¦show more content†¦The second level, tier 2, is more selective or targets children and youth with learning, emotional, or life experiences that put them at risk for behavioral or health challenges. Lastly, tier 3 provides intensive servic es to children and youth with identified disorders that may limit participation in occupational activities. There are not a lot of diagnoses throughout tier 1 and 2 but in tier 3, there are diagnoses of mental illness, severe behavior disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. A group of occupational therapy practitioners with mental health expertise chose specific areas for children and youth such as task-focused behaviors or peer and social interaction that best represented certain components that predict the likeliness of children participation in school, at home, and in the community. In other words, if the children could interact in these social environments, comply with directives, and engage in task behavior they were more likely to succeed throughout school, at home, and community environments. A total of 124 articles were used within the research; the breakdown being 77 as Tier 1, 27 as Tier 2, and 20 classified as Tier 3. There were three themes found within Tier 1 which i ncluded social skills, health promotion programs, and play, leisure activities. It was highly evident that
