Mechanical Engineering Cell Phone Lithium Batteries

Question: Discuss about the Mechanical Engineeringfor Cell Phone Lithium Batteries. Answer: Cell phones today mostly contain lithium-ion battery or more popularly known as Li-ion battery (in short LIB). These are a sort of rechargeable batteries where the lithium ions shift from the negative electrode to the positive one at the time of discharge and again when charging (Yoshino, 2012). Manufacturing Process The manufacturing of the lithium ion batteries are similar to the processes used in Nickel Cadmium cellsand Nickel Metal Hydride cells production (Pistoia, 2013). Micro-fabrication processes are suitable because of their capacity of helping ultra-miniaturize systems. Microfabrication is good with integration with electronics, simplification of technologies and taking advantage of scaling when it is working in the micro domain. There are also cost and performance advantages to microfabrication. Micorfabrication gives access to more intelligent materials with structures at the nano scale. During the process there is minimizing of energy and materials consumption. Mircrofabrication provides new possibilities in sensing and actuation because of favorable size scales. The future development of microfabrication methods must additionally explore the microfabrication process, while considering the commercial aspects like fabrication throughout and cost. For its development it should expand in areas outside of microelectronics including MEMS, microreactors, microanalytical systems and optical device. References Pistoia, G. (Ed.).
